TRP
Target Reference Point
An easily recognizable point on the ground — natural or man-made — designated by grid coordinate or alphanumeric code, used to initiate, adjust, and control fires.
TRPs serve as common reference points shared between the maneuver unit and supporting fires. By pre-registering TRPs, fires can be shifted rapidly during contact without re-transmitting full grid coordinates.
Naming and Registration
TRPs are typically assigned alphanumeric designators (e.g., TRP AA, TRP BB) and registered on the fire support plan. They are published in the OPORD fire support annex and shared with all supporting arms.
Tactical Use
- Sector markers: Define engagement areas and sectors of fire for crew-served weapons
- Fire control: "Shift LEFT 200, ADD 50 from TRP AA" allows rapid, accurate adjustment
- Trigger points: "When enemy reaches TRP BB, initiate FFE on TRP CC"
Integration in Dark Dot
Place TRP markers on the terrain plan as point features. Label them with their designator and link to the fire support objective to track engagement priority and status.
