FFE

Fire for Effect

A fire mission phase in which rounds are fired with the expectation of effectively neutralizing, suppressing, or destroying the target — as opposed to adjusting fire.

FFE is the terminal phase of a call for fire mission. The observer transmits "FIRE FOR EFFECT" after rounds have been adjusted onto the target (or when using predicted fire against a known target). The firing element then delivers the full fire mission as requested.

Call for Fire Sequence

  1. Observer Identification — who is calling
  2. Warning Order — type of mission (adjust fire, FFE, suppression, immediate suppression)
  3. Target Location — grid, polar plot, or shift from a known point
  4. Target Description — what the target is
  5. Method of Engagement — ammunition, fuze, number of rounds
  6. Method of Control — at my command, time on target, when ready

After FFE

Once rounds impact, the observer immediately conducts a Battle Damage Assessment (BDA) and reports results to the FSO. If the target is not adequately suppressed or destroyed, a subsequent adjustment or additional rounds are called.
