JTAC
Joint Terminal Attack Controller
A qualified service member who, from a forward position, directs the action of combat aircraft engaged in close air support and other offensive air operations against hostile targets.
JTACs are certified through a joint qualification process and must demonstrate proficiency in radio communications, aircraft identification, target description, and control of multiple aircraft simultaneously. They operate with ground units to coordinate CAS, armed reconnaissance, and strike missions.
Responsibilities
- Establish and maintain communication with supporting aircraft on assigned frequencies
- Positively identify and describe the target to aircrew
- Issue 9-Line CAS briefs and control aircraft through attack runs
- Deconflict fires with ground maneuver and other supporting arms
- Conduct BDA immediately after each attack
Integration in Dark Dot
Assign the JTAC as a team element within the operation and designate TRPs on the terrain plan as target markers. Link TRP objectives to the fire support plan to track strike sequencing.
