SITREP
Situation Report
A structured periodic report submitted by subordinate commanders to higher headquarters summarizing the current operational situation, status of personnel and equipment, and near-term intentions.
SITREPs are the primary mechanism by which a commander maintains situational awareness across echelons. They are submitted at prescribed intervals (e.g., every 6 hours) or triggered by significant events.
Standard SITREP Elements
| Field | Content |
|---|---|
| Unit | Reporting unit identifier |
| DTG | Date-Time Group of the report (DDHHMMZMMYYYY) |
| Location | Current position in MGRS |
| Situation | Enemy and friendly activity since last report |
| Personnel | PPSS: Present/Assigned/Casualties/Status |
| Equipment | Operational status of key systems |
| Logistics | Fuel, ammunition, water, critical shortfalls |
| Assessment | Commander's assessment of current situation |
| Intentions | Planned actions in next reporting period |
Reporting Discipline
SITREPs must be submitted on time even if there is nothing to report — "NEGATIVE REPORT" is a valid submission. Failure to submit degrades the higher commander's common operating picture and may trigger a welfare check that consumes additional resources.
Brevity Codes
Units typically establish brevity codes in their SOP to reduce transmission time. Example: GREEN = fully mission capable, AMBER = limited mission capable, RED = not mission capable.
