QRF
Quick Reaction Force
A designated force held at a prescribed readiness level to respond rapidly to reinforce committed forces, react to an emergency, or exploit a tactical opportunity.
The QRF is the commander's reserve — the force held back specifically to respond to the unexpected. A QRF that is committed prematurely or without a clear trigger leaves the commander with no reserve. Its value is in being available, not in being used.
QRF Readiness Standards
| REDCON Level | Response Time | Status |
|---|---|---|
| REDCON 1 | Immediate (0–5 min) | Vehicles staged, crew mounted, weapons loaded |
| REDCON 2 | 15 minutes | Personnel at vehicles, equipment staged |
| REDCON 3 | 30 minutes | Personnel in billets, equipment ready |
QRF Activation
The TOC monitors for trigger conditions and notifies the QRF commander. Standard triggers include:
- TIC (Troops in Contact) exceeding assigned unit's organic firepower
- CASEVAC request requiring additional security
- Breach of a protected site or critical facility
- Commander's discretion based on battle tracking
QRF Commander's Responsibilities
- Maintain communication with the TOC at all times
- Know the battle tracking well enough to orient on arrival without a full brief
- Rehearse the route to likely employment areas before the operation
- Brief subordinates on likely contingencies, not just the plan
