MSR

Main Supply Route

The primary route designated within an operational area along which the bulk of traffic moves in support of military operations. MSRs are assigned codenames and are subject to dedicated route security.

The MSR is the logistical spine of the operation. Disrupting an MSR — through IEDs, ambushes, or terrain — degrades combat power faster than direct fires. Route security and LOGPAC scheduling are planned around MSR conditions.

MSR Classification

ColorStatusMeaning
GreenOpenTraffic flows normally
AmberCautionRestricted movement, increased threat
RedClosedRoute is impassable or under enemy interdiction

Route Security Measures

  • Traffic Control Points (TCP): Regulate entry and movement
  • Route clearance: Engineer and EOD teams clear obstacles and IEDs
  • Convoy escort: Armed vehicles escort LOGPACs and civilian contractors
  • Route ownership: One unit is assigned responsibility for security of each MSR segment

Planning Considerations

The S4 and S3 coordinate LOGPAC timing against MSR status. Alternate Supply Routes (ASR) are pre-planned and rehearsed so LOGPACs can divert immediately if the MSR is closed.
