COP
Combat Outpost
A small, fortified position established forward of the main defensive position to conduct security, extend observation, and provide early warning. Typically occupied by a squad to platoon-sized element.
A COP extends the commander's eyes and ears beyond the main position, trades depth for early warning, and forces the enemy to commit before reaching the primary defensive line. Because a COP is a small, exposed force, its survivability depends entirely on fire support linkage, a solid PACE plan, and a rehearsed QRF.
COP Requirements
Every COP must have:
- Established communication with the parent TOC and adjacent units (PACE plan mandatory)
- Defined engagement authority: What ROE apply at this position?
- Casualty evacuation plan: Who is the CASEVAC asset, what is the route, what is the HLZ?
- QRF linkage: The QRF knows the COP location, access routes, and reinforcement plan
- Resupply plan: How does the LOGPAC reach the COP without compromising its position?
COP vs. OP
An Observation Post (OP) is a listening/watching position that typically does not have the fortification, size, or sustainment of a COP. OPs are covert; COPs are generally prepared defensive positions capable of sustained defense.
