AO
Area of Operations
The AO defines the spatial boundary of a unit's assigned responsibility. Operations occurring within the AO — whether offensive, defensive, stability, or enabling — are coordinated and de-conflicted by the assigned commander.
AO vs. Area of Interest (AI)
The Area of Operations is where the commander conducts assigned operations. The Area of Interest (AI) is a larger encompassing area from which the commander monitors and collects information, because activities there can affect operations within the AO. The AI always extends beyond the AO.
AO Graphic Control Measures
AOs are typically depicted on the operational overlay with one or more of the following:
- Boundary lines — lateral limits of the AO
- Phase lines — progress lines used for coordination and reporting
- Axis of advance — the main route or direction of movement
- Limit of advance (LOA) — the furthest extent of the attack
- Fire support coordination line (FSCL) — forward boundary for fires coordination
Nested AOs
Each subordinate echelon operates within a nested AO. A company AO sits within the battalion AO, which sits within the brigade AO. This nesting ensures clear command authority and eliminates coordination gaps. Seams — the boundaries between adjacent AOs — are typically the most vulnerable and contested terrain.
AO in Dark Dot
In Dark Dot, a Terrain Plan represents the commander's AO. Graphic control measures (routes, zones, objectives) can be overlaid to capture the full operational picture.
